'Ronaldo deserves a new contract every year' - Pavon pays homage to football monsters

Cristiano Ronaldo “should renew his contract every year”, says Francisco Pavon, with the Real Madrid ace deserving of everything that comes his way.

The Portuguese superstar committed to a new deal with the Blancos in November 2016 which is set to keep him at Santiago Bernabeu until 2012, but fresh terms have already been mooted.

Ronaldo continues to raise the bar of individual excellence, with another FIFA Best Award secured this year to sit alongside a fifth Ballon d’Or – with that prize drawing him level with eternal rival Lionel Messi.

Pavon says the 32-year-old’s standing at the very top of the game is justified, with his remarkable exploits for Real marking him out as a unique talent.

“Ronaldo should renew his contract every year if we look at his performances,” the former Madrid defender told Goal.

“There's no doubt at all. A different matter is whether the plans of the club and player fit together.”

Pavon added: "Is it fair Cristiano and Messi have the same number of Ballons d'Or? The one who wins the Ballon d'Or gets it because he deserves it.”

Ronaldo and Messi have dominated that particular field over the past decade, with other star turns – including club colleagues – forced to operate in their shadow.

“Luka Modric and Andres Iniesta are Ballon d'Or winners without the trophy,” said Pavon.

“It's not fair a player like Modric hasn't won the Ballon d'Or, but the incredible amount of goals of the other two football monsters hides his football.”

Modric will get another opportunity to prove his worth when Real face Barca on Saturday, with there plenty riding on a Clasico clash as Zinedine Zidane’s reigning La Liga champions sit 11 points adrift of their arch-rivals.

“At the beginning of the season, Real Madrid didn't score goals,” said Pavon.

“They weren't bad at all, but there weren't the goals. Now they have improved the defensive line as well.

“They are going through a great period ahead the Clasico. And so are Barcelona. At the beginning, they won many games playing just so-so, but taking the points. That's the main difference in the table right now.”

Pavon added on Real’s class of 2017 and how they compare to the Galactico-studded side he graced at the turn of the 21st century: “This is the best squad since the 90s. Not only for the five titles, but especially for the two consecutive Champions League wins.

“Who is better out of this team and the Galacticos after winning five titles in 2017? They are different.

“Even the games are different. In the game nowadays there is much more possession, whereas before individual performances were more important.

“Those players were incredibly talented. Surely Cristiano and Messi are at that same level. But it's difficult to compare both teams and both stages as football now is much more about the collective.”
