Rare Tevez goal is scant consolation for Shenhua in humiliating defeat

The ex-Boca Juniors forward was finally on target, but it made little difference overall as the Shanghai club were thrashed in Saturday's derby

Carlos Tevez finally saw his name on the scoresheet for Shanghai Shenhua on Saturday, but it was the only moment of joy for the hapless side as they were thrashed 6-1 by city rivals SIPG.

The Argentine striker had gone three months without scoring for the Super League club, and broke that drought with a smart close-range finish 60 minutes in.

Spurs and Swansea 6/1 to draw

Having been told by caretaker coach Wu Jingui during the week that he was "overweight" and unlikely to play, it was a perfect response from Tevez after he came off the bench at half time.

Unfortunately for his club that goal came with Shenhua already trailing 3-0, and SIPG added three more for good measure to complete an historical thrashing at the weekend.

The 6-1 result marks Shenhua's worst-ever result against their rivals, as well as their fifth successive defeat in the Super League - a run that cost Gustavo Poyet his place on the bench last week as the team continued in free-fall.

Tevez has also come in for fierce criticism during his time in China, and is widely expected to take up an option in his contract that will allow him to return to Boca Juniors at the end of 2017.
