With both teams strong at the back, Al Hain-Cole expects Steven Gerrard's men to endure another tense Europa League clash against the Gorozhane

Rangers will be hoping to take a major step towards the Europa League group stages when they welcome FC Ufa to Ibrox for Thursday’s play-off first leg clash.

Steven Gerrard has enjoyed an impressive start to his managerial career, overseeing six wins and no defeats from his first 10 matches in charge.

Latest Odds

The former Liverpool star is available at 8/13 (1.62) with William Hill to extend that strong record with a home win that would put his side within touching distance of a first group stage appearance since 2011.

Taking part in their first ever season in European competition, the Gorozhane are priced at 9/2 (5.50) to put one foot in the group stages with a shock away victory in Glasgow.

Three of the hosts’ last five matches in this competition have resulted in draws, and there are odds of 14/5 (3.80) on offer on them being forced to settle for another stalemate in this one.

Team News

Jamie Murphy is out for the season after injuring ligaments in his knee at Kilmarnock at the weekend, although Jordan Rossiter, Graham Dorrans and Lee Wallace are said to be approaching full fitness.

Alexey Nikitin and Yerkebulan Seidakhmet are injured for the guests, while new signing Lovro Bizjak is cup tied after playing and scoring against them in the previous round for Domzale.

Although best remembered for his sensational goals during his playing days, Gerrard’s strong start to life in the dugout has been based on a solid backline.

The Gers have conceded just four goals in 10 games under their new manager, keeping four clean sheets in six European matches so far.

However, seven goals in six Europa League qualifiers at the other end of the pitch suggests they may struggle against a Russian side that has punched above its weight by conceding only 55 goals in 30 domestic league games over the last two seasons.

All in all, even odds (2.00) offer decent value on no more than one team finding the net in a tight game that features under 2.5 goals in total – a bet that would have paid out in five of Rangers’ six qualifiers so far.
