Interim coach Dave Sarachan is likely to give a number of young Americans their chance in the senior team following the World Cup qualifying disaster

A young United States team will take on Portugal in its first international match since the humiliating loss that cost the Americans a place at next summer's World Cup.

The U.S. fell to Trinidad & Tobago last month and will sit out the tournament in Russia as a result.

That game cost Bruce Arena his job as head coach and Dave Sarachan will lead the team on an interim basis in Leiria.

GAME PREVIEW

Juan Agudelo USA

A new era for the U.S. begins without many familiar faces.

Most of those absences for this friendly against Portugal will only be temporary, though, and Dave Sarachan's place in the dugout is likely to be the same.

The interim coach will take charge of a young squad missing the likes of Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore and Clint Dempsey, as well as the best youngster of the lot in Christian Pulisic.

But while Dempsey, Tim Howard and a few others well into their 30s might be looking at the beginning of the end in the international arena, permanent changes are unlikely to be as dramatic as many fans were calling for after the embarrassing failure to qualify for next summer's World Cup.

Exactly when Bruce Arena's successor will be appointed remains to be seen, with a long wait now until the Americans' next competitive game.

For now, young hopefuls such as Weston McKennie and Tyler Adams will get a chance to show they are ready to ensure the USA's World Cup failure is not repeated.
