Neymar has undergone successful surgery on his broken foot, with the Paris Saint-Germain and Brazil star now starting his recovery process.

The 26-year-old suffered a fractured metatarsal during a domestic outing for PSG against Marseille last weekend.

After initial confusion as to whether he would be forced under the knife, the decision was taken to send him for an operation.

That procedure was carried out at the Materdei Hospital in Belo Horizonte on Saturday, with Brazilian news outlet UOL Esporte reporting that Neymar spent a little over two hours in theatre.

A statement released by PSG read: “The operation led by Dr. Rodrigo Lasmar went perfectly well. It consisted of the insertion of a screw placed at the level of the lesion of the fifth right metatarsal.

“Rehabilitation will begin immediately under the supervision of the physiotherapist of the club. A report will be made in six weeks to specify the possible date of resumption of training.”

Neymar is now under observation in a recovery room, with his mother Nadine and three friends alongside him for support.

PSG have sent medical consultant Gerard Salliant with their €222 million asset to monitor his recuperation.

Neymar’s father, who is also his agent, has remained in Paris to take in the second leg of a heavyweight Champions League last-16 encounter with Real Madrid which PSG currently trail 3-1.

Their hopes of turning that tie around have been rocked by an untimely injury to their superstar forward, with Neymar set to miss a number of crucial games over the coming weeks.

It was initially suggested that he will be sidelined for around three months, with Brazil’s national team doctor, Rodrigo Lasmar, offering an early prognosis.

He told Globo TV: “It will be two-and-a-half months to three months of recovery for Neymar.

“After surgery we will have more details about this time. He is sad, upset, but understands that he has no alternative but to recover as soon as possible.”

Supporters of PSG and Brazil will be anxiously waiting on further news, with both sets of fans eager to see a key man back in action as soon as possible.

Neymar could return in time to help his club side wrap up a Ligue 1 title triumph, but it remains to be seen how many competitive minutes he can get under his belt before going in search of global glory at this summer’s World Cup in Russia.
