Newcastle United v Tottenham Hotspur Betting Tips: Latest odds, team news, preview and predictions

The Premier League campaign gets underway for these two sides on Saturday lunchtime, with - at time of writing - neither club having enjoyed a particularly successful summer in the transfer market.

Magpies manager Rafa Benitez has had precious little money with which to work in the summer window, while his north London counterpart Mauricio Pochettino has also been financially restricted.

Nevertheless, both sides have retained the bulk of their respective squads which last season saw them finish higher than expected in the table.

Spurs finished third last term behind the Manchester clubs and are offered at 21/20 (2.05) with William Hill, while Newcastle, who secured a top half finish on their return to the top flight are priced at 14/5 (3.80).

Only two of the last 37 meetings in all competitions between these teams have ended in a draw and a stalemate is priced at 11/5 (3.20).

Team news

Spurs were affected more than most clubs by the World Cup, with the north Londoners' having nine representatives in the semi-final of the tournament including Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Jan Vertonghen and Hugo Lloris.

Newcastle centre-back Florian Lejeune faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines following a knee injury picked up in training last month, but new signing Salomon Rondon could make his debut.

Preview

Last season, Spurs won both meetings against Newcastle without conceding and the Magpies' total of 21 goals scored in 19 home games was one of the lowest in the division.

All three of the goals that Pochettino's men netted against the Tyneside outfit last season came in the second half, and Spurs have a habit of being considerably more prolific in the second period.

In 2018, 24 of their 35 Premier League goals have come after the break and in the first game of the season, with some key players likely to be missing, there is every chance the opening 45 minutes at St. James' Park sees few goals.

Tips and predictions

Backing a goalless first half at 7/4 (2.75) could appeal, but going a step further and backing the game's first goal to come in the second half at 5/2 (3.50) could be an intelligent move.

Newcastle have managed just 20 goals in 17 league games in 2018 with the majority of those (12) coming in the second half, so backing the opening goal to come in the second period makes sense and is offered at a healthy price.
