Newcastle Jets hit eight past Central Coast Mariners in record-breaking clash

A new A-League record has been set for most goals in a match with Newcastle Jets annihilating Central Coast Mariners 8-2 in Gosford.

The Mariners who held the previous record for a 5-4 loss to Sydney FC, found themselves 3-0 behind within half hour after Joey Champness, Roy O'Donovan and Riley McGree all got their name on the score sheet.

With a wooden spoon staring them in the face should they lose, Central Coast would respond via Connor Pain before halftime.

But the floodgates would well and truly open in the second 45 minutes with McGree, Lachlan Jackson and O'Donovan making it 6-1 before the 70th minute.

McGree would then complete a well-earned hat-trick, Trent Buhgiar would peg one back for the Mariners and Dimi Petratos completed the rout as Newcastle soared into the finals after a disappointing few weeks.

The Mariners on the other hand, end a disappointing season with a wooden spoon and incoming coach Mike Mulvey certainly has plenty of work to do.
