New Orlando Pirates striker Obiozor targets 15 goals next season

Nigerian striker Christian Obiozor has likened Orlando Pirates to Spanish and European giants Real Madrid.

The 22-year-old sealed his move to the Buccaneers over a week ago, signing a three-year deal with the Soweto giants from Enyimba.

“Pirates is like Real Madrid. It’s a club that wants to win trophies all the time. In order for you to do that, you have to give 100%,”Obiozor told the Sunday Times.

Obiozor recalled how his move to the Sea Robbers came about. He said he met with Dr Irvin Khoza last week to put pen to paper.

The Nigeria international was also made aware of the expectations as well as the pressure that comes with donning the black and white jersey by the Bucs chairman.

“My agent and I met with the chairman last week. He has a good relationship with the chairman of Enyimba,” said Obiozor.

“Chairman Khoza told me a lot about the club and made me aware that an Enyimba player [Onyekachi Okonkwo] once came here and played for Pirates,” he continued.

Obiozor admitted that for a team like Pirates to finish a season without a trophy was simply not good enough.

However, he's confident that next season will be different for the men in black.

“A season without a trophy is sad for the players. By the grace of God this is going to be a good season for Pirates. The coach [Kjell Jonevret] gave me aword of encouragement. He talked to me as his son, saying ‘this season we need to push and me I say Ok Sir’,” he continued.

Obiozor went on to say he was motivated by Raphael Chukwu's achievements at Mamelodi Sundowns. Chukwu was one of the most feared strikers on the continent during the 90's.

The new Pirates man is hoping to score at least 15 goals in his debut season in the PSL.

“What Chukwu did for Sundowns motivates me. If I can get 15 goals this season I will be very happy for myself. By the grace of God it will happen. As a striker, when you come to a club you have to set targets. Otherwise what is the point?,” he quizzed.

Obiozor featured for Kjell Jonevret's side in a friendly match against Polokwane City last week.
