Fidelis Ilechukwu's side secured a victory over the Anambra side, and the new striker shone like a million star

MFM handed a 2-1 defeat to FC IfeanyiUbah in an enthralling Nigeria Professional Football League encounter at the Agege Stadium on Wednesday.

A beauty from Akila Jesse - who was making his second appearance and home debut and Issif Traore's own goal rendered Pascal Seka's effort a consolation as the Lagos side made it two wins out of two home games.

The tie started lacking spark as both sides struggled to get a grip on their game but the encounter bounced to life in the sixth minute.

FC IfeanyiUbah forward Ekene Awazie was shown a yellow card for tripping a marauding Sikiru Olatunbosun and the resulting free kick from Stanley Okorom missed the target by whiskers.

Instantly, the visitors saw their first chance of the game as Awazie, who left Julius Emiloju sprawling, sent a dangerous cross into MFM’s area which evaded an onrushing Solomon Nzube into the safe hands of Abayomi Folarin.

Fidelis Ilechukwu’s men, however, got the lead in a stunning fashion. New boy, Akila beat his marker with a step over at the left side of the box before squeezing a shot past Drissa Bamba.

Winger Olatunbosun failed to double the lead in the 20th minute after he miscued a lobbed effort, with only Bamba to beat.

The hosts would pay for the miss nine minutes later after Seka drilled a firm left-footed effort past Folarin.

MFM had claims for a penalty turned down by the referee after Olatunbosun’s shot appeared to have been handled by a FC IfeanyiUbah defender in the penalty area.

They would, however, get a reprieve after defender Traore redirected Olatunbosun’s effort into his own net with three minutes before the interval.

The Olukoya Boys took the lead into the second period, which continued in the same template as the opening 45.

Second half substitute Chukwuka Onuwa brought some fluency into the hosts’ midfield and almost extended their lead but saw his effort sail over the bar.

Bamba had to be at his best to deny Akila a brace on his home debut. Olatunbosun swung in a delightful cross but the shot-stopper was on alert with a point-blank save off the striker’s firm header.

In the 72nd minute and against the run of play, Seka missed a gilt-edged chance to draw the Flying Antelopes level, with only Folarin to beat.

A goal-line clearance was all it took to deny Onuwa a goal for the second time after the attacking midfielder, in tandem with Waheed Adebayo, embarked on a smart counter-attack.

Ladan Bosso's men piled pressure on MFM, with Seka the main anchor, but the hosts put in a resilient performance to scale through and hold firm to their second win of the season.
