Mathare United skipper George “Wise” Owino has expressed his admiration for Samuel Olwande.

Olwande perfectly covered for Owino, who has been missing in action for eight weeks due to a broken toe suffered in the Round 12 match against Wazito.

Olwande was moved to central defence and also handed the armband and he lived up to expectation, though Mathare's overall performance has been wanting.

“I was impressed by how they performed in my absence because they showed a lot of character.

"Olwande did a good job leading the team and it will not be easy to return to the first team. They have a very good understanding (with Omurwa) and I have to work really hard to regain my place,” said Owino.

For the during that Owino was away, the Mathare have only picked one win and dropped 14 points in the process.

That run has left the 'Slum Boy's third on the log with 33 points, seven shy of league leaders Gor Mahia.

Owino, however, believes that Mathare can still mount a strong title challenge in the second leg.

“All is not lost. We can still win the league but we have to get back to winning ways. It is all about taking our chances because many teams will want to do well against us in the second leg,” Owino told the club website.
