Manyama credits Tinkler for helping him become PSL’s best footballer

Manyama stole the show at Monday’s PSL awards ceremony in Sandton, winning three individual awards on the night

Cape Town City captain Lebogang Manyama has paid tribute to former coach Eric Tinkler for believing in him despite the fact that he was carrying an injury at the start of last season.

“My journey has been long. The past 18 months have been amazing even though I suffered an injury when I was still at Mpumalanga Black Aces. For that, I would like to thank coach Muhsin (Ertugral) and Elsa Storm (fitness coach) and the technical team at Aces (for helping me recover),” Manyama said after winning the PSL Player of the Year.

Manyama became the first-ever Alexandra-born player to be crowned Footballer of Year.

“Coming to Cape Town City, I would like to thank the boss, John Comitis, and I would like to thank coach (Eric) Tinkler. I don’t know where he is, but I know he is here - thank you coach for believing in me. Even though when I came with an injury, you made me captain and even when I didn’t train with the team, you made me captain. Thank you for that,” Manyama said.

Apart from winning the Player of the Season award, Manyama also scooped the Lesley Manyathela award.

“I wouldn’t finish this night without thanking my teammates. They made me what I’m today. They have supported me from day one, and I believe in as much as it’s written PSL Footballer of the Season, I’ll take it and say it’s PSL Team of the Season. The team of the season for me is Cape Town City, I’m City,” Manyama proclaimed.

He ended the campaign with 14 goals in all competitions following his 36 appearances in City’s impressive debut campaign.
