The Red Devils can secure a seat among Europe's elite by winning the Europa League, but their Spanish midfielder says silverware is the main focus

Ander Herrera has “history”, rather than Champions League qualification, on his mind as Manchester United ready themselves for the Europa League final.

The Red Devils enjoyed a 25-game unbeaten run in the Premier League this season, but were ultimately forced to settle for a sixth-place finish.

Success has been toasted in the Community Shield and EFL Cup, but a return to Europe’s elite club competition has always been the ultimate target.

They will get one more opportunity to book themselves a seat at that table against Ajax in Stockholm on Wednesday, but Herrera insists silverware is proving to be more of an incentive at present.

He told ESPN: “First of all it's a European trophy. That's what I am going to have in my mind. We will have time to think about different things afterwards.

“It's a European trophy this club has never won. We can make history for the club, so that's the only thing I have in my mind - always respecting the opponent because they want to make history as well.

“I don't have anything else in my mind apart from winning the final and trying to get the trophy for this club.”

The success of United’s season is likely to rest on the outcome of the game in Sweden, with Herrera acknowledging that the club are 90 minutes away from something “amazing”.

The Spain international added: “It could be an amazing season and an amazing start for the manager.

“I don't want to talk about if we win it because we have to face a very good team, but I said after the FA Cup final last season we were building something good here, and it is confirmed now.”

United’s past successes in Europe have seen them lift the European Cup/Champions League on three occasions, most recently in 2008, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

They also claimed the European Super Cup in 1991, but have never lifted the UEFA Cup/Europa League.
