Leno hails 'incredible' Torreira: He had 'another perfect game today'

Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was effusive in his praise of midfielder Lucas Torreira following a fantastic display in the north London derby on Sunday.

The Uruguayan controlled proceedings in the middle of the pitch at the Emirates, as Arsenal notched a thrilling 4-2 win over rivals Tottenham.

Torreira even popped up with a goal in the 77th minute to seal the victory, his first time scoring for the Gunners.

The 22-year-old has been growing in stature for Arsenal as the season has gone on, after making a £26 million ($33m) move from Sampdoria in the summer.

After starting the season as a substitute, Torreira has taken hold of a place in Unai Emery's first-choice XI, helping the Gunners rattle off a 19-match unbeaten run.

Leno, himself a summer signing who has become a starter for Arsenal, had plenty of praise for his team-mate's display on Sunday.

"Torreira is incredible. He’s a fighter and he’s so important for our game, for the whole defence," the German told Arsenal.com.

"He produced another perfect game today."

Arsenal's victory pushed them above Spurs in the table, with Emery's men now sitting in fourth place on goal differential.

After losing their first two games of the season, the Gunners have run off 12 consecutive league matches without a defeat, including nine victories.

Emery's side were given confidence by a 1-1 draw against Liverpool in early November, and have now notched their first win of the season against one of their fellow 'big six' sides.

"It’s not just an important game for a manager to win against a team from the top six, it’s important for us as a team," Leno said.

"We lost the first two games against Chelsea and Manchester City but against Liverpool we played very well.

"We didn’t win that one but today we won against a good team and showed a very good performance."
