Kaizer Chiefs vs. Cape Town City headlines Nedbank Cup quarterfinal draw

Kaizer Chiefs have been handed a tough draw as they will face Cape Town City in the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals following the draw which was conducted on Thursday night.

With last season’s champions Free State Stars already eliminated, Premier Soccer League (PSL) sides such as Bidvest Wits, Amakhosi, Bloemfontein Celtic, Golden Arrows, Chippa United and City are touted as favourites.

Although the tournament is known for causing shocks, there are only two clubs from the National First Division (NFD), TS Galaxy and Cape Umoya United who will come up against each other.

The opening match of the last eight will see coach Lehlohonolo Seema’s Phunya Sele playing hosts to former coach Steve Komphela’s Golden Arrows in the Free State province.

In the second clash,  the Clever Boys face a rejuvenated Chilli Boys under the guidance of Clinton Larsen at Bidvest Stadium.

Although Chiefs have played teams from the lower divisions of South African football in their previous stages, coach Ernst Middendorp’s side will be at home this time around against the Citizens, who are coached by Benni McCarthy, in what will be one of the most highly anticipated encounters of the round.

Meanwhile, the PSL will announce the dates, venues and kick-off times in due course as the final eight teams battle it out for the whopping R4 million in prize money and the trophy.
