Issa Diop makes Premier League history with own goal against Arsenal

The defender was luckless on his debut for the Hammers when a shot bounced off of him and in, and it did much to dampen his side's day

West Ham United defender Issa Diop made some Premier League history against Arsenal, but not the kind he will be bragging about any time soon.

The 21-year-old became the eighth player to score an own goal on his English topflight debut and the first Hammer to do so in the competition.

A miscued clearance soared up in the air and Aaron Ramsey nodded down for Alexandre Lacazette to drive into the goalmouth, with Diop only able to divert into his own net to give the Gunners a 2-1 lead.

Unai Emery’s men sealed their first win of the season thanks to Danny Welbeck’s strike in the 90th minute at Emirates Stadium.

Overall, the former Toulouse player was on parade for 90 minutes making a total of 17 passes, 36 touches, conceding two fouls and ultimately getting a yellow card to complete his ill-fated bow.

Diop, whose grandfather was the first Senegalese footballer in Ligue 1 is eligible to represent Senegal or Morocco on the international scene.
