Mohun Bagan thumped Goan outfit Churchill Brothers 5-0 on a rainy afternoon at the Barasat Stadium in Kolkata on Sunday. Head coach Sanjoy Sen, however, was more anxious and worried about the injuries picked up by key players including Sony Norde and Yuta Kinowaki.
"Not happy, but I am in an anxious mood today. So many players have been injured which is extremely bad for us. And even after winning by 5 goals, there is no time to relax as there are two difficult matches ahead," said Sen.
The Green and Maroon coach then went on to give a report on the injuries. "Yuta has suffered a dislocation in his collarbone and will be operated today evening. Sony Norde has a slight niggle on his right knee. Kromah has injured his adapter muscle whereas Arijit Bagui has also injured his ankle. These are the four major injuries and once they are properly diagnosed we can confirm the actual status of the injuries. We will practise tomorrow and day after tomorrow so let’s see what we can do."
Sen said that the Barasat turf might be one of the reasons behind so many players getting injured. "Maybe one of the reasons (Barasat turf). Norde already stated yesterday that we have a good track record at Barasat but the condition of the pitch affects a player psychologically. But still, we have to be mentally prepared as there are three matches to be played here."
Sen also admitted that they had been cautious after winning the derby so that they are not hit by complacency. "I repeatedly reminded by boys not to be overconfident after the derby win. Today we won by five goals which can also lead to being overconfident. But I am careful and will start working from tomorrow itself."
The I-League winning coach also said that there is nothing to be overjoyed with the performance of the foreigners as there is still room for improvement and went on to praise young players like SK Faiaz.
"There were many instances where they could have switched the play. I told them during half-time. In the second half, they tried to play that way, and it is a good thing that Faiaz got a goal. Indian players like Shilton, Raynier, Ricky, Kingshuk, Arijit, they have all have played outstanding football."
Sen compared his goal-scoring prowess on the day to the performance in the Kolkata derby. "The same result could have been possible in the Kolkata Derby as well. But we missed the chances to score. Today also we have squandered chances. But I know that on some days it will be difficult to get even a single goal. So we have to be careful."
Although he is happy with the two clean sheets, he is aware that his defence has not been tested yet. "We have to continue to like this till the end. Their attack was not threatening enough to test the defence. But after derby we have not conceded a goal, this is a good thing," concluded the coach.
