Gor Mahia 2-1 KCB: Champions claw visitors for second win

Kenyan Premier League (KPL) champions Gor Mahia maintained their perfect record in the league after defeating KCB 2-1 at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.

Striker Francis Afriyie opened his account for the team with the opener before Lawrence Juma's screamer doubled the advantage. The Bankers scored their consolation courtesy of Enock Agwanda.

It took the Bankers just 13 minutes to realise the defending champions meant business. Bolton Omwenga failed to shut Wellington Ochieng on the right, and the right-back fired a low cross into the dangerous area and Ghanian Francis Afriyie took a one-time shot to open the scoring.

The visitors had a real chance in the 27th minute when K'Ogalo failed to clear their line. Joash Onyango's header fell kindly on Stephen Waruru, but the former Ulinzi Stars striker failed to hit the target from twelve yards.

Lawrence Juma doubled the advantage in the 32nd minute with a fierce low shot from 20-yards. The Bankers conceded a corner and they failed to put the ball to safety. It eventually fell to the unmarked Juma who unleashed an unstoppable shot past Joseph Onyango in KCB's goal.

The Zedekiah Otieno-led side were given a lifeline in the 37th minute when they were awarded a penalty following Ochieng's clumsy foul on Waruru. Former K'Ogalo striker Enock Agwanda rose for the occasion, bursting the ball past hapless Robert Mapigano to bring his side back into the game.

The champions were forced into an early substitution a minute later when Afriyie was forced out following a suspected groin injury, and Samuel Onyango took his position.

The latter thought he had given his side a third goal a minute after the resumption, but there was a handball in the process and the goal was scrapped off by the assistant referee's flag.

KCB were wrongly denied an equaliser in the 56th minute when Samuel Onyango found the back of the net. The assistant referee raised an offside flag, though the replays suggested otherwise.

Despite a spirited performance from the Bankers in the second half, the champions held on to record their second win in as many matches.
