The European champions looked solid in their opening game of the La Liga season and we are backing them to keep things tight again on Sunday night

For only the second time in the history of La Liga, Girona host Real Madrid on Sunday evening.

Last season's first ever fixture between these two sides at the Estadio Montilivi saw the Catalans claim a famous 2-1 win on their way to a tenth placed finish in their inaugural season in the Spanish top flight.

Madrid therefore will be wary of their trip to the north-east corner of Spain this weekend, although Girona look to be weaker this season than they were last term.

Latest odds

The Catalans drew 0-0 against newly promoted Valladolid in their opening match of the season, and bet365 offer them at 15/2 (8.50) to claim their first win of the 2018/19 campaign.

Real Madrid meanwhile looked solid in their 2-0 victory over Getafe and are available at 1/3 (1.33) while the draw can be backed at 9/2 (5.50).

Team news

Luka Modric started Madrid's opening game on the bench but could be in line for his first start of the season, while in goal Julen Lopetegui has both Keylor Navas and Thibaut Courtois fit and available for selection.

Girona defenders Jonas Ramalho and Carles Planas are missing along with Colombian international wing-back Johan Mohija, whilst striker Cristhian Stuani has been training alone this week after suffering some muscular discomfort.

Girona surpassed all expectations last season to finish in the top half, yet the loss of their tactically superb manager Pablo Machin is likely to see them struggle this term.

His successor Eusebio is more pragmatic and will probably set his side up in a more defensive formation than the exciting 3-5-2 which saw Machin's team cause plenty of problems last term.

Under Lopetegui, Madrid are showing signs of being defensively more organised and against Getafe, Navas did not have a save to make until the 90th minute.

Los Blancos also enjoyed 78 per cent possession last Sunday and keeping hold of the ball effectively is something Lopetegui is instilling in his team.

Tips and predictions

Madrid only kept four clean sheets in 19 away league matches last term and that record will have to improve if they are to maintain a serious title push.

The European champions are offered at 11/10 (2.10) to shut out Girona, while they can also be backed at 10/11 (1.91) to win by two goals or more as they did in their opening game of the season.
