Ghana 1-0 New Zealand: Black Princesses bid goodbye to Women's U20 World Cup with smiles

The West Africans made amends for their disappointing opening two games with a victory on Sunday

Ghana bowed out of the Fifa Under-20 Women's World Cup on a winning note following a 1-0 triumph over New Zealand in their last group game on Sunday.

Ruth Anima registered the only goal at Stade Guy Piriou in Concarneau, France.

A 4-1 defeat to the hosts on matchday one and a 4-0 loss to tournament debutants Netherlands meant Sunday's result did nothing to help the Black Princesses qualify for the next round.

Ultimately, Ghana finished third in Group A, four and three points adrift of France and the Netherlands respectively, but two marks above bottom-placed New Zealand.

The two European sides are through to the next round.

Anima's lone goal came in the 75th minute when she headed a rebound into an empty net after Grace Asantewaa's powerful shot from outside the box came off the crossbar.

Ghana's quest for a place in the knockout stage of the women's U-20 World Cup continues, having failed to progress in four earlier appearances.
