Former NSL, A-League winner facing drug and weapon charges

Two-time National Soccer League champion Nikola Mrdja is facing 23 serious drugs, weapons and stolen property charges, according to The West Australian

The 40-year-old, who played for Perth Glory in the NSL before winning a Premiers Plate with Central Coast Mariners in the A-League, fronted a brief court hearing on Wednesday with his lawyer revealing he intends to plead not guilty to all charges.

Mrdja's charges include 10 counts of aggravated possession of a firearm, two counts of possession of a silencer, possession of methamphetamine and three counts of possession of stolen property.

The one-time Socceroo has had his bail extended until his next court hearing on June 5.

Mrdja spent four years with Glory in the NSL winning both the championship and premiership twice - scoring a golden goal in the 2004 grand final against Parramatta.

The striker would go on to enjoy a brief stint in Sweden with AIK before returning to Australia with the Mariners and ending his career in controversial fashion with Melbourne Victory.

This latest court hearing comes just months after another former A-League player, Adrian Caceres, was jailed for 18 months after being found guilty of drug dealing
