Former Chennaiyin FC midfielder Elano named interim Santos boss

Elano Blumer has been appointed as the interim manager of Brazilian giants FC Santos after head coach Dorival Junior was sacked on Saturday. Junior was appointed Santos boss for a second time in July 2015 and in his two spells, he guided the team to 111 wins, 44 losses and 34 draws.

The Brazilian, who hung up his boots last year in November, joined the club’s technical staff in January.

Santos are placed 16th on the Brazilian Serie A table with the latest defeat coming against Corinthians following which Dorival was asked to leave. They have only amassed three points from their opening four games this season.

“The former jersey number 11 Elano, who at the beginning of this season joined the permanent technical committee of Santos FC as technical assistant, takes over the Santista team temporarily,” read a statement from the Brazilian club on Sunday.

For Chennaiyin FC, after seeing John Stiven Mendoza join MLS outfit New York City FC last season, this is yet another feather in their cap.

Elano would hope that his coaching career starts on a positive note when Santos takes on Botafogo who are seventh on the table.
