Fan who invaded Poland-Portugal to try and hug Ronaldo fined €500

The fan who invaded the Euro 2016 quarter-final clash between Poland and Portugal to try and hug Cristiano Ronaldo has been fined €500.

Shamshir Karimi, 22, interrupted the tie - which Portugal won 5-3 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time - in the 110th minute when he raced onto the field and was caught by a security team when in touching distance of Ronaldo.

In a Marseille courtroom, the Swiss fan spoke of how his actions were fuelled by the fact that Ronaldo is his “idol”.

However, Mr. Karimi has since been hit with a charge and also banned from returning to France in the next month due to his actions.

One fan managed to get onto the field to take a selfie with Ronaldo during Portugal's 0-0 draw with Austria after the Real Madrid superstar held back security and gave his consent.

Ronaldo can become the joint-highest scorer in European Championship history if he manages to find the net in Portugal's semi-final clash against Wales on Wednesday.
