The 24-year-old is seen as one of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) brightest talents, but has found game time hard to come by at Chloorkop especially after returning from his loan spell with Maritzburg United at the beginning of the season. Despite returning, Mngonyama was deemed surplus to requirements at Sundowns and has spent the first half of the 2017/2018 PSL season on the side-lines.
Nonetheless, the centre-back will once again be under the spot light as he has completed a move to the ambitious Citizens. According to the club, a deal was struck on Thursday and Mngonyama has arrived in Cape Town where he is expected to link up with his new teammates on Friday morning.
“Kwanda flew into Cape Town late last night after the deal was concluded. He will meet his new teammates later this morning, and begin as a Cape Town City player 1 Jan (January)” a tweet issued by the club read.
Meanwhile, City coach Benni McCarthy was delighted with the club’s latest acquisition.
"When I heard there was a chance for City to land Kwanda I was instantly excited,” McCarthy told the City’s Twitter account.
“Mngonyama is a soldier and probably one of the most promising defensive talents to come out of SA in a long time...
"Seeing where the club is going, building for the future, this was a key acquisition for us. I can't wait to start working with the young man and get him to where he should be," he concluded.
