Betting: How new Premier League transfer window rules would have impacted this summer

This season saw yet another underwhelming transfer deadline day cap off yet another summer of outrageous spending.

Premier League teams shelled out a phenomenal £1.4 billion in the last two months or so, but they will have less time to do it next summer as the 20 top flight clubs have voted to shut the window prior to the first game of the season.

That means that in future, teams will have to assess their needs and wants before playing a competitive game, and if it happened this year, it would have slammed shut at 5pm on August 10th and we would have missed out on a whole host of moves.

Wilfried Bony

In his first spell at Swansea, Wilfried Bony quickly became a fan favourite and scored 26 times in 54 matches before moving to Manchester City for around £25 million.

After struggling to break into the team consistently, he went out to Stoke City on loan was not all that effective there either, prompting the Welsh club to bring the Ivorian back on the same day they sold Fernando Llorente.

You can back Bony to open the scoring on his second debut, with dabblebet offering 17/4 (5.25) that he scores first against Newcastle United and adds to his three goals against the Geordies.

Fernando Llorente

Speaking of the Swans, they would still have had Llorente if the transfer window had shut before the league started.

But it did not, and they do not, as they sold the Spaniard to Tottenham Hotspur to fill in if Harry Kane gets injured or loses his shooting boots.

The former Athletic Bilbao striker is 13/10 (2.3) to find the back of the net anytime against Everton, or 17/4 (5.25) to score first as he did last season for Swansea when they played the Toffees at home.

Gylfi Sigurdsson

One more for the Swans, then they will not appear again. Promise.

The career of Gylfi Sigurdsson has always led him back to Wales, but it seems now he may be gone for good after signing for Everton just a few days after the first Premier League games of the season for a reported £40 million.

The Icelandic midfielder gets to play one of his former clubs this weekend in Spurs, and after scoring a stunning 50-yard goal against Hajduk Split last month, he may be in the goalscoring mood and is 7/1 (8.0) to net first at Goodison Park this weekend.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain

The Ox all seemed set for a £40 million move to Chelsea the day before the transfer window shut, but changed his mind at the last second and decided he wanted to move to Liverpool instead.

The Reds duly obliged and signed the versatile midfielder for reportedly around the same cost, before doing his duty with the national team.

Chamberlain only netted 20 times during his Arsenal career, but as an impact substitution at Anfield he may see more playing time in his favoured position and can be backed at 17/4 (4.25) to score anytime against Manchester City.

Joselu

Back in the top flight after a year away, Newcastle United spent over £36 million this summer to ensure they would not go back down – including buying the services of striker Joselu for £5 million from Stoke in the middle of August.

The German-born Spaniaird faces a fight to start regularly around players like Dwight Gayle and Aleksandar Mitrovic, but he could still prove to be a useful tool for the Toon off the bench.

That being said, Joselu opened the scoring against West Ham just before the international break, and is 6/1 (7.0) to do the same again when Newcastle travel to south Wales on Saturday afternoon.

Chris Wood

It’s probably fair to say that Leeds United wish the transfer window had shut early this year so they could keep hold of Chris Wood, but it’s probably also fair to say that they will be very happy with £15 million.

The New Zealand international scored 27 times last season as Leeds narrowly missed out on the playoffs, and opened his Burnley account on his debut with a 92nd minute equaliser at Wembley against Spurs.

Wood is 9/2 (5.5) to net first this weekend as Crystal Palace make the journey north to Turf Moor, whilst he can also be backed at 6/4 (2.50) to score anytime.
