Refiloe Jane and Rhoda Mulaudzi have both joined the increasing number of Banyana Banyana stars who ply their trade overseas as professional footballers after Canberra United confirmed that they have acquired the services of the duo on Monday.
Jane and Mulauzi became the first ever South African Women players to move to Australian top-flight league, and they will be taking part in the 11th season of the Westfield W-League which is set to get underway in October.
According to a statement released by Canberra United, the two South Africans have been involved with the club’s winter programme as part of their trial process.
Head coach Heather Garriock was impressed by the two Banyana Banyana players.
Heather said in their short time in Canberra, the two Banyana stars have been very impressive.
“It was hard for them to get here, and then to come in to a different environment and play, but they have done very well to adapt and really stood out for me,” said Heather.
Jane took Heather by surprise with her technical ability in midfield which the coach described as ‘simply outstanding’.
Jane led South Africa to the 2017 Cosafa Cup title as captain. The versatile player also represented the country at the 2012 and 2016 Olympic Games as well as leading the Tshwane University of Technology to glory in both the Varsity Football and University Sport South Africa Football (USSA) tournaments.
The Klipspruit-born player was part of the formidable TUT attack that gave defenders sleepless nights in the Sasol Women's League.
Mulaudzi on the other hand, is a Banyana forward, who has all the attributes Heather is looking for up front - pace and aggression.
She netted seven goals when Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies beat Pull Together FC 14-0 last season in the Sasol Women's League.
The 28-year-old scored one of the most important goals of her career against Zambia in the semi-finals of the 2017 Cosafa Cup to force the match to be decided on penalties. South Africa eventually won the match 5-3.
With the two players joining Canberra United, coach Desiree Ellis will hope they add value and return to make Banyana stronger.
Jane expressed delight at joining Canberra United saying: “I am very excited and grateful for the opportunity at Canberra United. I am looking forward to the season and making most of this chance.”
Mulaudzi described the opportunity to play in the Austrialian elite league as exciting.
“This is a very exciting opportunity for us,” said the 28-year-old.
