Italian side Udinese made a late approach to sign Konstantinos Mavropanos, Goal understands.

The 20-year-old joined Arsenal from Greek side PAS Giannina for a fee in the region of £1.8 million on Thursday and manager Arsene Wenger confirmed that the youngster would be sent out on loan in the coming weeks to aid his development.

Goal understands that Udinese were heavily interested in signing Mavropanos after being impressed by the centre-back at the Viareggio Cup tournament last March, which featured PAS Giannina’s Under-20 side.

Orestis Karnezis and Panagiotis Kone are two of the most high profile names to have swapped Greece for Udine in recent seasons and it’s understood that Mavropanos turned down the club's proposal once he heard of Arsenal’s interest.

Greek champions Olympiakos also wanted first refusal on the highly rated defender and were prepared to pay €1m for the Athens-born player, but the proposal was turned down by PAS Giannina, who said they would accept any bids in excess of the aforementioned amount.

Mavropanos trained with his new team-mates for the first time on Friday morning and is expected to continue practising with the Gunners until a loan move is thrashed out. Werder Bremen are in advanced talks and remain the frontrunners to sign the Greece Under-20 international.
