The South African police has confirmed that Phala could be arrested after a case of alleged abuse was opened against him

SuperSport United midfielder Thuso Phala, could face the threat of being arrested after a case of causing grievous bodily harm was opened against him.

This follows the circulation of a picture on social media, which allegedly shows Zintle Mbatha‚ severely beaten by the Bafana Bafana player and a female friend. A case of assault has subsequently been opened at the Alexandra Police Station against the 31-year-old with his arrest imminent.

“I can confirm that an assault case with GBH was opened by the victim here at the Alexandra Police Station on Tuesday evening and a detective has been assigned to the case‚” Alexandra police spokesperson Ali Kodisang told TimesLIVE.

“No arrests have been made but I can tell you that the victim received her case number and an arrest for the perpetrators is imminent,” Kodisang said.

When questioned why an arrest was not yet made, Kodisang said that the matter is still being investigated.

“I would imagine the detective in charge of the case is still investigating,” Kodisang said.

“The investigating officer is not here at the moment.

"I will be able to answer that question once I have spoken to him later today or tomorrow (Friday)," Kodisang concluded.

Meanwhile, SuperSport issued a statement addressing the allegations, stating that Phala has vehemently denied such claims and has sought legal counsel.

“SuperSport United has become aware of allegations of abuse involving Thuso Phala circulating on social media. The club has spoken to the player, who denies the allegations and has sought legal advice against these defamatory allegations. SuperSport United will let the law take its course, suffice to say that the club condemns violence of any form, especially against women and children,” the statement read.
