Another look at Alderweireld? Mourinho watches Belgium beat Iceland despite no Fellaini or Lukaku

Jose Mourinho was among those in attendance as Belgium took on Iceland in the UEFA Nations League, sparking reports that Manchester United may still be keen on Toby Alderweireld.

With domestic football having shut down during the international break, the man in charge at United has taken the decision to head out of Old Trafford, seemingly on a scouting mission.

His first port of call was Brussels, with the Portuguese heading to the King Baudouin Stadium on Thursday evening.

Mourinho was not there to watch two of his own players, however, with Belgian duo Romelu Lukaku and Marouane Fellaini both unavailable for selection.

The former is currently nursing a calf injury which is preventing him from being risked while the latter was left out of Robert Martinez’s latest squad amid issues regarding his fitness.

Who, then, was Mourinho keen to take a look at?

Tottenham defender Alderweireld would be the most obvious choice, given the long-running rumours regarding a possible move to Manchester for the 29-year-old.

He was said to be a top target for United over the summer, as Mourinho sought to bring another proven centre-half onto his books.

The Red Devils were to be left empty-handed, however, as the deadline passed with no deals done, but further moves are expected to be made in January.

Interest could be rekindled in Alderweireld, as he is yet to commit to a new contract with Spurs .

His performance against Iceland should have helped to keep him in Mourinho’s thoughts, despite the Portuguese leaving after 65 minutes, as he helped to secure a comfortable clean sheet.

Belgium ran out 2-0 winners on the night , with Michy Batshuayi bagging a brace.

The Chelsea striker, who is currently on loan at Valencia, took full advantage of Lukaku’s absence to stake a claim for a more regular starting berth.

Martinez’s side have another Nations League clash with Switzerland to come on Sunday, but it remains to be seen whether Mourinho will decide to take in more international football before attention switches back to Premier League matters for United and a home date with Crystal Palace on November 24.
