AFC U16 Roundup: India held Iran, Indonesia manage 1-1 draw against Vietnam

Day five of AFC U16 Championship 2018 featured four matches. The day kicked-off with India holding giants Iran for a goalless draw in Group C and Japan managing a 2-2 stalemate against Oman In Group B.

In the second set of games in Group B and C respectively, DPR Korea defeated Yemen 1-0 and Indonesia were held to a 1-1 draw by Vietnam.

India’s fine run of form continued in the competition as they moved a step further to qualify from the group stages. After a 1-0 win over Vietnam, they held continental giants Iran. They now need a point from their final match against Indonesia to book their place in the quarterfinals.

Group B

Jordan and Oman played out an exciting 2-2 draw in the first game. Reziq Mohammed gave Jordan the lead in the 49th minute before Oman restored parity within five minutes via Omar Nasser’s strike.

Amer Rasem put Jordan in front once again in the 75th minute however Nasser Abdallah scored the equaliser for Oman in the 86th minute.

Meanwhile, Kim Won-Il’s first-half strike was enough for DPR Korea to beat Yemen 1-0. Wiith this result, Yemen have no chance of making it into the quarterfinals.

Group C

Iran dominated proceedings throughout the match and came close on numerous occasions to break the deadlock but the Indians defended valiantly. They even earned a penalty in the 75th minute but custodian Niraj Kumar saved it to guarantee a point for India.

Bibiano Fernandes’ boys also got chances to score but they squandered them. Overall it was an impressive result for the India colts who were up against a very strong Iranian side.

Vietnam held Indonesia to a 1-1 draw. Khuat Van Khang scored the opening goal for Vietnam in the 31st minute. Substitute Sutan Diego Armando Ondriano restored parity for the Indonesians.

After the second round results, India and Indonesia are tied on four points. If the two teams manager a draw among themselves in the next fixture then both will qualify into the quarters.
