AFC Champions League: Zoran Mamic - Al Ahli and Al Ain in the same boat

The Saudi outfit host the Arabian Gulf League side on Monday in the first of the two fixtures and visiting coach Zoran Mamic believes that both sides are in the same scenario having dropped out of contention for their respective leagues and that will make for an interesting contest.

"Al Ahli's position is similar to ours having fallen out of the race for the Saudi league title. The goal for both teams is now clear - to compete for the AFC Champions League title. This will enhance the confrontation between the two teams," Mamic said at the pre-match press conference on Sunday.

Nevertheless, Mamic made his intentions clear.

"We've come to Jeddah to provide a great game against one of the best clubs in Saudi Arabia," he said.

"We expect a strong showing from Al Ahli who are well organised but we will do our best to return home with a good result," he added.

Omar Al Soma thumped home a late winner as Al Ahli overcame Zobahan 2-1 in the second round while Al Ain sit just two points adrift of the Saudi side after 2016 AFC Player of the Year Omar Abdulrahman netted a late penalty to see off Bunyodkor 3-2 two weeks ago.

The match will take place at the King Abdullah Sports City in Jeddah at 20:30 UTC+3 on Monday.
