He was unable to cause an upset against France, but Australian midfielder Aaron Mooy has drawn huge praise for his performance in Kazan with former Socceroo Ljubo Milicevic declaring he could fit right into the French side.
France were unconvincing against the green and gold with a controversial penalty and Paul Pogba strike that just crept over the goal-line securing a 2-1 win over Australia.
Mooy was a standout for the Socceroos in midfield, arguably outperforming Pogba as he delivered a number of fine free-kicks and often won the ball back in the middle of the pitch.
A vital part of the Australian side, Milicevic believes Mooy would have the ability to line-up for the Les Bleus had he not been born Down Under.
"Aaron Mooy always stands out for me, he's just a gun," Milicevic told Goal.
"The way he plays he could slot into the French team, he is that comfortable on the ball."
It was a strong performance all round from the Socceroos as they went painfully close of a positive result against a very strong France side.
After a shaky 2-1 win against Hungary in their previous game, nearly every Australian player pulled their weight against France.
"Sainsbury at the back, Milligan as well, I think all the boys were really tight," he said.
"I don't think there was anybody that under-performed."
