Maniche announces retirement

The former Portugal international has opted to call time on his playing career one year after leaving Sporting Lisbon on a free transfer
Maniche has announced his decision to retire from professional football with immediate effect.

The former Portugal international had been without a club ever since leaving Sporting Lisbon in the summer of 2011, and has opted to hang up his boots at the age of 34.

"I played alongside great players at some of the best clubs in the world and I have been managed by great coaches. In life there is a time for everything and I have a feeling of accomplishment," Maniche was quoted as saying by the Uefa website.

The midfielder came through the ranks of the Benfica youth academy, but enjoyed his biggest successes at rivals Porto.

Maniche won the Uefa Cup, Champions League and two Portuguese league titles at Porto, among other trophies.

He also wore the jerseys of clubs such as Alverca, Dinamo Moscow, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Inter and Koln throughout his playing career.
