Having been expected to shine for Ligue 1 champions Girondins de Bordeaux this season, Yoann Gourcuff has struggled to match his form of 2008-09, and coach Laurent Blanc believes that a lack of confidence is at the heart of the problem.
The recently-named French Footballer of the Year has struggled with an adductor problem for a large portion of the season thus far; an issue that Blanc believes has had a negative impact on his young star’s play. Indeed, Gourcuff was disappointing on Wednesday evening when Bordeaux met Montpellier in a top of the table clash, missing a second penalty kick in succession.
“He lacks a little confidence and a little physical power,” Blanc explained to Sud-Ouest. “Above all he is missing a reference game after his injury. It may be mental, he may need a vacation.
“He had a few minor glitches in the big matches for the France team ...”
Blanc has backed the creative midfield star to come back with a bang after the winter break, stating, “[He will have a] good holiday and 2010 will be a perfect year.”
Bordeaux still have two more Ligue 1 fixtures to negotiate before 2009 draws to a close, starting with an awkward home match against Lorient on Saturday.
Looking further ahead, les Girondins can look forward to a Champions League last 16 tie against Olympiacos in the new year.
