OFFICIAL: Olympique de Marseille Complete Stephane Mbia Signing

Les Phoceens have tied up the defensive midfielder on a four-year deal…

The long-running transfer saga of Stade Rennais' anchoring midfielder Stephane Mbia has finally been concluded today as Olympique de Marseille announced the signing of the Cameroon international midfielder on a four-year deal.

Mbia, who had played his entire senior career with the Breton outfit prior to this move, had been linked with a move to the Premier League last summer, with Everton touted as his likely destination. Such rumours resurfaced again during this transfer period, with the Blues again suggested as Mbia’s next club, although Stoke City were reportedly ready to break the bank for the versatile 23-year-old.

However, Olympique de Marseille have been bold regarding the rangy middle-man, heading the pack for several weeks. Talks appeared to be in jeopardy last week as les Phoceens struggled to reach personal terms with Mbia. However, the impasse was solved over the weekend and OM have confirmed his signing on Monday morning.

The Yaounde native will be presented to the press at Marseille’s Commanderie training ground later this afternoon, where he will be grilled over his ambitions with the Provence club. He has previously indicated that his stay at the Stade Velodrome will be short, hinting that he may even depart next summer after gaining Champions League experience with Didier Deschamps' men.

With their defensive regions well and truly reinforced, Marseille are rumoured to be in the market for young attacking players, with Nancy’s Issiar Dia linked to the club by L’Equipe on Monday.
