Wigan Athletic Agree Fee With Hamilton Academical For James McCarthy

Hamilton Academical's highly-rated midfielder James McCarthy was earlier reported to be on the verge of completing a move to Premier League newcomers Wolverhampton Wanderers.

However, Wolves face competition for the player from Wigan Athletic, where new manager Roberto Martinez (pictured) is looking to put his own stamp on the Latics' line-up.

Wigan have confirmed this afternoon on their official website that a bid for the player, who is Scottish-born but has chosen to represent the Republic of Ireland internationally, has been accepted by the Accies.

A statement on the Lancashire outfit's official website reads:

"Wigan Athletic can confirm that the club has had a bid for 18-year-old Irish international James McCarthy accepted by Hamilton Academical.

"The club has been given permission to speak to the player."

The size of the bid has not been revealed by the Latics, but Sky Sports News earlier reported that Wolves' offer was worth £1.5 million.

The player must now discuss personal terms and choose between the two clubs.
