Nicolas Anelka Wins Premier League Golden Boot

The French striker is top of the scoring charts at the end of round 38...
Nicolas Anelka netted his 19th goal of the season for Chelsea against Sunderland on Sunday to secure his status as Golden Boot winner for Premier League season 2008-09.

Prior to the visit to the Stadium of Light, the Frenchman was level on 18 with Cristiano Ronaldo. But, with the Manchester United man being rested for his side's 1-0 win over Hull City, that early strike in the north-east put Anelka in an unassailable position.

Anelka, 30, becomes the second Frenchman to win the Premier League top scorer award after Thierry Henry, as well as becoming the third Chelsea player to do so, after Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Didier Drogba.

His tally of 19 is the second lowest top scorer tally in Premier League history, with 1997-98 and 1998-99 seeing the award won by a tied group of three players on 18 on both occasions.

Anelka signed for the Blues in the winter transfer window in 2008 from Bolton Wanderers for a fee of £15m. He managed just one league goal for the London side in his debut season, but this year has hit 25 in all competitions, including two in the Champions League.
