The City midfielder could be punished for using abusive and/or insulting words towards the officiating team following his side's defeat to cross-city rivals United on Sunday

Gareth Barry has been charged for using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official in the aftermath of Manchester City's defeat to Manchester United on Sunday.

The champions were beaten by a last-minute Robin van Persie free kick after coming back from two goals down to tie the game in the second half.

Sunday's contest was largely overshadowed by the home support, who pelted United's players with coins as they celebrated the Dutchman's winner.

Rio Ferdinand was cut above the eye while another fan attempted to get onto the pitch, before being stopped by Joe Hart.

Barry has until December 13 to respond to the charge.
