Manchester United prospect Will Keane suffers cruciate knee ligament injury

The promising 18-year-old is expected to be out for an extended period of time after damaging his knee during England Under-19's clash with Switzerland on Wednesday
Manchester United youth prospect Will Keane has suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury and is likely to be sidelined for a lengthy period of time.

The young striker suffered the injury while playing in England Under-19's clash with Switzerland on Wednesday, a game they went on to win 1-0.

The 18-year-old forward made his first-team debut last season, appearing as a substitute during the Red Devils' 3-2 defeat to Blackburn on New Year's Eve.

And his manager Sir Alex Ferguson says Keane was set to play an even bigger role with United's senior squad next campaign.

"I am very disappointed for the lad," Sir Alex told the club's official website.

"He was in the first-team squad for next season."

United captain Nemanja Vidic suffered a similar injury last term during a Champions League clash with Basel in December. He is expected to return for the start of next season following an absence of nine months.
