Stoke City Defender Ryan Shawcross: Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger Has Something Against Me

England international hits back at claims...
Stoke City defender Ryan Shawcross believes Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has a personal vendetta against him.

Wenger claimed that both Shawcross and his Stoke team-mate Robert Huth were acting more like rugby players than footballers during their match against Tottenham last month, and that they had repeatedly fouled Spurs goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes.

The Frenchman also accused Potters captain Shawcross of kicking Gomes in comments published on the Arsenal official website.

Wenger has been vocal in his criticism of Shawcross' tackling before, namely when Arsenal midfielder Aaron Ramsey broke his leg in a challenge with the centre-back last season.

And the 25-year-old told the Stoke Sentinel: "He's obviously got something against me: It's just weird.

"He seems to have a problem with Stoke, our manager and certain players.

"It's just disappointing he came out and said something that wasn't needed.

"He could have said there was a problem week-in, week-out in the Premier League, but he shouldn't have named individuals."

Following Wenger's words, Stoke officially complained to Arsenal, the Premier League and the FA, which lead to the comments being removed from the website.

And Shawcross added that Wenger was entitled to his view, but should ensure his facts are correct first.

He said: "I don't mind people having their opinions, but if it's not a game involving his players then I don't see the point of bringing up me and Huthy.

"Criticism doesn't bother me, unless it's a false accusation like this one.

"I've watched the video again and at no point did I go anywhere near Gomes.

"I didn't think I had, but I didn't want to say I hadn't touched him before looking at the video to make sure."
