Despite being on the backfoot for most of the game, Wigan came away with the win as striker Hugo Rodallega scored the only goal of the game 10 minutes from time to secure the Latics' first points of the Premier League season.
And after the game boss Martinez spoke of his delight after a spirited team performance downed Spurs.
“We were playing against a truly talented side and we had to be at our best to be competitive,” Martinez told Sky Sports News.
“But we showed a clear determination, a clear desire to work for each other.
“We had a great team performance and we really looked a threat going forward.
“Not many teams will come here and get a result and that is credit to the players.”
It has been a difficult week for Wigan, with Charles N’Zogbia looking to leave the club despite failing to agree terms with Birmingham City, and Martinez felt it was important to keep faith with his players.
“The players we have at this football club have real talent and a clear desire to play for each other and Wigan Athletic," he continued.
“Obviously the other side is to remain focused and give your life to get a result and that focus comes from having the whole group concentrating and we showed that in abundance today.”
Martinez also believes that this result, that also saw the Latics climb off the bottom of the table, can kick start his side's season.
“From a scoreline point of view it does kick-start our season but we still need to work a lot and we need to finalise the squad which is very important," he added.
“But today the players deserve to enjoy the moment and today is a historic result and day for Wigan Athletic.”
