West Ham United have been forced to abandon their bid to sign Ajax striker Miralem Sulejmani after he failed to secure a work permit, according to skysports.com.

The club had agreed a season-long loan deal with Ajax for the Serbian international, but under Premier League criteria Sulejmani does not qualify for a permit because he has only won eight caps in the space of two years.
West Ham appealed the decision but an independent football panel ruled against the appeal.

New West Ham boss Avram Grant was hoping to include Sulejmani, who is Ajax's record signing after they paid Heerenveen more than £13 million for him just two years ago, in their squad ahead of their opening game at Aston Villa this weekend.

Avram Grant is having a frustrating time in the transfer market as he tries to secure a striker, having also had two bids for Everton striker Yakubu turned down.
