Aston Villa put the disappointment of Sunday’s 2-1 loss to Blue Square South side Basingstoke with a 3-2 victory over League One’s Peterborough United.
Villa pulled off a victory with the help of two sensational first-half goals from Ashley Young and John Carew.
Martin O'Neill's side, who also started the game with the likes of Brad Friedel, Richard Dunne, Stiliyan Petrov and Stuart Downing, came out strongest against Gary Johnson’s side with the first action all coming in Posh’s half as Downing and Young both pressed down the flanks.
The Villans made the break through after nine minutes when Young picked up the ball 25-yards out far out and proceeded to sublimely lob United goalkeeper Joe Lewis to put Villa 1-0 up.
Two minutes later, however, with the wind in Villa’s sails, Peterborough equalised through a smart cut-inside by Arron Davies and a neat finish past Friedel.
However, Villa restored their lead as continual pressure on the Peterborough goal led to Young feeding John Carew inside the area, and the Norwegian cleverly back heeled the ball out of the reach of Lewis for a half-time lead.
Villa started the second period as they finished the first with right-back Eric Lichaj, playing on the other side tonight, powered in a header just before the hour mark to put Villa beyond reach.
United managed a second goal with 20 minutes remaining, as defender Charlie Lee wrong-footed substitute goalkeeper Elliott Parish, to set up a nervy finish but as the 90 minutes came to a close, Villa will be returning to Birmingham knowing they deserved the victory.Villa lineup: Friedal (Parish), Lichaj, Dunne (Berry), Downing, Young (Bannan), Carew (Collins), Albrighton (Hogg), Petrov (Osbourne), Reo-Coker (Forrester), Beye, Collins (Lowry).
