Player Ratings: Manchester City 2-1 Manchester United

MANCHESTER CITY

Shay Given
- 8 - Unlucky to see point-blank save from Rooney deflect to Giggs for the goal and kept out a close-range header from the same man. Denied Rooney a number of times when played through.

Micah Richards - 5 - Left in Giggs' trail for the Welshman's goal. His pace and power should have been enough to stop this situation occuring. Yet another example of lack of defensive nous.

Dedryk Boyata - 4 - Understandably nervous in the biggest match of his career. Saw Given's save deflect off him to Giggs. Taken off for Onuoha.

Vincent Kompany - 5 - Oafish display from start to finish. Contributed to City's stupor and gave away a series of clumsy free kicks. Turned with ease by Rooney at start of second half.

Javier Garrido - 4 - Had no answer to Valencia. The Ecuadorian breezed past him out wide and burst in to the middle without challenge.

Pablo Zabaleta - 5 - Poor on the ball and powerless in the tackle. Looked unsure in centre midfield.

Nigel De Jong - 7 - Came to life after the interval. Found the aggression to bite into the tackle and knock his United opponents off their perch. Cynical, but smart, foul on Evra saw him go in to the book.

Gareth Barry - 7 - Sat back far too deep in first half but freed himself from shackles in the second. Took the battle to Carrick and Fletcher, often working his way past the United wall. Excellent supply from corners.

Shaun Wright-Phillips - 7.5 - Few players trouble Evra; he joined the exclusive club tonight. Tricked his way past the Frenchman a number of times and always looked to pump crosses in to the United area. Wasn't his fault he had no-one to aim for. Hooked for Sylvinho.

Carlos Tevez - 8.5 - Months of anger evaporated with power bolt of a penalty and celebration for headed second. Usual industrious self throughout the match, even finding time to nutmeg Darren Fletcher. Let down by his team-mates' lack of forward thinking in first half. Substituted for Benjani after running his socks off.

Craig Bellamy - 6 - Went down for penalty in only moment of note. Angered Valencia with a high tackle. Booked for later indiscretion.

Substitutes

Nedim Onuoha - 7 - Poked Owen's shot off the line soon after he came on.

Sylvinho
- 6 - Steadied the ship and added ballast to his flank. Stole the ball from Scholes to run down the clock.

Benjani - 5 - Lacked Tevez's exuberance and was urged to get involved by the home crowd.

MANCHESTER UNITED

Edwin Van der Sar - 6 - Stood no chance of keeping out Tevez's thunderbolt. Otherwise played no part in the match.

Rafael da Silva - 4 - Showed his naivety again with a needless tug back on Bellamy. Offence possibly occured outside area, but left Mike Dean with a decision he shouldn't have had to make. Second daft spot kick given away in a month. Booked for offence and taken off for Diouf.

Wes Brown - 6 - Gobbled up City's piecemeal passing to the forwards with ease. Wasn't forced to break a sweat.

Jonny Evans - 4.5 - Charged out like a school child to leave Tevez unmarked for his second goal. Rookie defending hit United where it hurt.

Patrice Evra - 5.5 - Given the run-a-round a few times by Wright-Philllips. Typically adventurous when piling forward to support Giggs.

Michael Carrick - 5 - Game summed up United career. Made hay when the going was good in first half but disappeared from view when City finally clicked in to gear. Questions about bottle will appear again.

Darren Fletcher - 7 - Won possession back in midfield and looked to play in Valencia. Only United midfielder who can say he played well throughout the whole 90 minutes.

Anderson - 6 - Linked well with Rooney in his advanced midfield role, although Ferguson would have looked for him to be involved with greater frequency. Substituted for Owen as United looked for an equaliser.

Antonio Valencia - 7.5 - Has found his stride in the United shirt. Both Garrido and Zabaleta had no answer to his pace and trickery. City's decision to grant him space out wide was punished when he put in the cross that Giggs' tap-in came from. Substituted for Scholes.

Ryan Giggs
- 7 - Turned from winger to goal poacher to give United the opener with his charge in to the City box. Floated out wide otherwise and City found it an impossible task to get the ball off him.

Wayne Rooney - 8 - Used his experience of playing the lone man role to good effect and was United's only inspiration. Held off the City centre-backs and holding midfielders with ease. Only a number of great saves from Given stopped him scoring.

Substitutes

Michael Owen - 7 - Gave the City defence something to think about when he came on. Had shot cleared off the line.

Paul Scholes - 5 - Added nothing to United's push for parity. Barely found a team-mate after taking to the pitch.

Mame Biram Diouf - 6 - Sent a late header wide after being brought on just shy of injury time
