The 17-year-old was reported as being close to sealing the switch last summer, but no deal ever materialised. However, he now claims that the process is as good as concluded, and only trivial formalities remain before the move is confirmed.
"The sporting challenge is key for me and is more important than the money," the youngster is reported as telling Spanish sources by Sky Sports.
"I want to improve my level and I see less opportunities at Espanyol so I have accepted a move."
The player went on to reveal that Martinez's persistence in pressing for the move was a crucial factor in him making his decision to join the Latics.
"Roberto Martinez has insisted on my arrival and this has been key," he stated.
