Aston Villa Defender Wilfred Bouma Could Be Forced To Retire By Injury - Report

A report in England suggests that the Dutch international's career could be over ...
Aston Villa defender Wilfred Bouma could be forced into retiring from football by the injury that prevented him from making a single Premier League appearance last season.

Just yesterday fellow left-back Nicky Shorey was wishing the Dutchman a speedy recovery from the dislocated ankle that has kept him out of action since July.

But today The Daily Mirror is reporting Bouma is being forced to consider his options after another injury setback prevented him from returning to first-team action in the new year.

The 31-year-old joined Villa in 2005 from PSV Eindhoven and was a regular fixture in the first-team until he was sidelined in UEFA Cup qualifying action against Odense.

Bouma did make an appearance for the reserves in a victory over Chelsea in March, but did not play a part again for the remainder of the campaign.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill handed the strong stopper a new two year contract in September 2008, such must his hopes be that he recovers in time for the 2009/10 season.

O'Neill has already lost Danish centre-back Martin Laursen to a career-ending injury this summer.
