Nigeria Console Equatorial Guinea After Player’s Death

The NFF says Esono was a patriotic player who played with verve.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Aminu Maigari has sent a letter of condolence to his Equatorial Guinean counterpart, Bonifacio Manga Obiang over the death of Nzalang Nacional Ladies player Teclaire Bille Esono.

Esono, a key member of the Equatorial Guinea side that reached the final of the African Women Championship in South Africa last month, died in a car crash in Cameroon on Tuesday night along with her brother.

“We at the Nigeria Football Federation recall that the now deceased player was a strong presence for your team at the 7th African Women Championship which took place in the Republic of South Africa in October/November of this year, and played with verve and vivacity, commitment and passion to help your team reach the Final of the competition against our own Super Falcons,” wrote Maigari.

“Certainly, Miss Esono had her life and career in front of her with the kind of dedication, discipline and patriotic fervour that shone through her, and it is a thing of grief that she has now lost her life in a car crash.

“We fervently pray that the Almighty God will grant the family she has left behind and the entire Equatorial Guinean football family the fortitude to bear the big loss, and that He will also grant the departed eternal rest”.

Esono would have been part of the Equatoguinean side to make their first bow at the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Germany next year, but for her unfortunate passing.
