Tunisian national team coach Bertrand Marchand held a press conference today at FTF headquarters where he announced the names of 23 players who will form his roster for Tunisia’s 2012 AFCON qualifier against Togo on October 10th.
Facing an ultimatum from his employers to get a result in Lome, the Frenchman has decided to make quite a few changes to a team that struggled in both home matches they played in qualifiers thus far. The most notable additions are that of Esperance goalkeeper Wassim Nawara, Deportivo La Coruna’s Lassad Nouioui, and two FC Zurich players, Amine Chermiti and Chaker Zouaghi.
The mistake prone Hamdi Kasraoui has been omitted after his poor showing against Malawi while the team captain, Karim Haggui, is suspended for this encounter due to yellow card accumulation.
Meanwhile, Marchand has called up Issam Jemaa despite public calls for him to be ousted from the Carthage Eagles setup for his goal celebrations against Malawi during which he made inappropriate gestures toward his own fans who had been booing him throughout the game.
“In my estimation he’s an important and efficient player. One shouldn’t forget that in Chad he was one of the principal actors in our victory. Against Malawi he did something he shouldn’t and I’ve spoken to him about it at length but he is very sad about having done that,” he explained to Mosaique FM.
“Unfortunately Issam is very sensitive who can lose his head quickly. Between the quality that he shows sometimes and these mistakes, he needs to be more level headed because he’s currently in the midst of becoming the best Tunisian goalscorer of all time but not everyone likes him which is abnormal because people usually like players who score goals.”
