Nigeria played a 1-1 draw with Colombia at the MK Dons Stadium in England on Sunday night.
Monaco youngster Haruna Lukman scored the all important equaliser for Nigeria in the second half after Carlos Valdes had put the Colombians in front in the first half.
On a night when Nigeria coach Lars Lagerback was expected to field his strongest team, the Nigerians began the game on the back foot.
Returning to the team, Everton’s Yakubu Aiyegbeni led out the attack alongside Lokomotiv’s Osaze Odemwingie. In the midfield Lagerback started with deep playing midfielders Yusuf Ayila, Dickson Etuhu and Sani Kaita.
They were slow in moving forward and the Colombians took advantage of the midfield which resulted in Valdes’ 22nd minute goal.
The second half was much better for the Eagles as Lagerback brought on Wolfsburg’s Obafemi Martins for Yakubu as well as Lukman for an underperforming Ayila to spice up the attack.
These changes eventually paid off as the substitutes combined to get Nigeria even in the 70th minute. Martins put a measured pass in the path of Lukman who hit it out from about 30 yards to the low right corner of the Colombian goal.
Lagerback is expected to name his final squad after this game and many Nigerians are guessing which big name star will be dropped after this performance.
However, many Nigerians are already calling for the addition of the young Lukman to the World Cup squad three years after he led the U17 team to a world triumph in South Korea.
