Uganda Batter Ethiopia In CECAFA Youth Championship Opener

On Wednesday evening, the Ugandan Under-17 team thumped Ethiopia U-17s 4-0 in a historic opening day of the CECAFA U-17 championship in the Sudanese capital of Juba.

Juba was witnessing its first international football match after decades of civil war that ended only a few years ago.

A grand opening ceremony was experienced by Salva Kiir, the Vice President of the Unity Government of Sudan, who is also the President of the autonomous Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS).

The Sudanese team is playing in the Khartoum-based Group A, but local citizens packed the Juba Stadium to the brim to witness the clash between Uganda and Ethiopia.

Julius Kigori opened the scoring in the 35th minute before Dan Serukama hit the second in the 68th minute. Abdallah Mohamed added the third in the 86th minute before Ismail Kabugu finished the rout three minutes later.

On Thursday Kenya take on Zanzibar in Juba, while in group A, Sudan will take on Tanzania. In another small stadium in Khartoum refurbished for this championship, Somalia will play Malawi. Rwanda will also face Eritrea in Wad Medani.
