Nigeria Remembers Fallen Hero Samuel Okwaraji 20 Years After

Twenty years after he collapsed and died while playing for Nigeria against Angola in a World Cup qualifier, the country is remembering the midfielder...

It is 20 years since Samuel Okwaraji slumped and died at the National Stadium in Surulere while featuring for Nigeria's Super Eagles in a World Cup tie against Angola, and to mark this tragic incident, both the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and Lagos State Government have lined up some events on Wednesday.

A special match in honour of Okwaraji between a national selection of players from the local league against the country's Under-20 team is slated for Wednesday in the capital city of Abuja, while Lagos State Governor Babatunde Fashola will star in another match to commemorate Okwaraji's death.

Following his death on August 12, 1989, a statue was erected in front of the National Stadium Surulere in honour of Okwaraji.
